1956 A Tragedy
Lionel Watts contracted poliomyelitis (Polio), an illness that resulted in him becoming a quadriplegic. After a long recovery from the acute illness, Lionel tried to find a rehabilitation program, which would enable him to re-enter the workforce. None was available. He also found a sad lack of training and rehabilitation programmes for many other types of disabilities. At that time he, and his wife Dorothy, committed themselves to helping the disabled... So began the 'Houses With No Steps'
1962 How we began
In 1962 "The Wheelchair & Disabled Association of Australia" was formed. This remains our official charity. The various 'Houses With No Steps' branches are projects of this association predominately for training of the disabled in vocational and independent living skills. 'Houses' have been established at Belrose, Wollongong, Newcastle, Belrose, Alstonville, Gold Coast and the Philippines.
1971 Summerland House With No Steps
1971 Commenced with the purchase of a 69-hectare dairy farm at Alstonville. Its aim was to provide training and employment for disabled rural youth. The avocado was to be the main crop because of its long fruiting season (March to November). A lot has happened since then! There is now an orchard of some 5,000 macadamia trees and 3,500 avocados. Farm related activities include fruit packing, macadamia dehusking and carton assembly. Tourism activities have been developed including a restaurant, nursery, gift shop, children's playground and extensive gardens.
Currently these activities provide employment for over 80 people with disabilities, which is very pleasing. Unfortunately there is a large waiting list of people with disabilities seeking. More jobs need to be created to help these people, either by expanding existing activities or developing new ones. This requires capital expenditure. This is where we need your help.
